Offseason tips to prepare for summer

September is usually my favorite time down on LBI, but this past month has certainly left us soggy. As the leaves start to turn and the days grow shorter, the offseason is right around the corner. While it's tempting to hibernate until next summer, this is actually the perfect time to make some thoughtful changes and upgrades that will enhance your home for when the summer sun returns. Let’s explore a range of ideas and tips for prepping your coastal retreat during the offseason so that it's ready to shine when beach season rolls around again.

  1. Fresh Coastal Colors: Consider giving your interior spaces a fresh coat of paint in soothing coastal hues. Think serene blues, sandy beiges, and seafoam greens. This can instantly brighten and rejuvenate the space, creating a relaxing atmosphere. Check out my blog post on paint colors here

  2. Update Furnishings: Swap out tired or worn pieces for new ones that capture the essence of beach living. Look for natural materials like rattan and driftwood finishes. If anything is in good condition, consider donating to the local ReStore or posting on LBI Curb Alert.

  3. Flooring Renewal: With limited visitors, now’s the time to upgrade your flooring with materials that can withstand sand and water. Easy-to-clean tiles or durable hardwoods are great choices for coastal homes. Area rugs in beachy patterns can also add warmth and style.

  4. Kitchen and Bath: Consider updating your kitchen and bathrooms with beach-themed elements. New countertops, coastal backsplashes, and ocean-inspired tile can give these spaces a fresh, seaside feel.

  5. Outdoor Living: Take advantage of end-of-season sales! Invest in new outdoor furniture and landscaping. A comfortable outdoor living area can become the heart of your vacation home during the summer months.

  6. Storage Solutions: Evaluate your storage needs. Enhance your space with smart storage solutions that keep beach gear, towels, and linens organized and accessible. And if you need someone to help, check out Orderly at the Shore

Of course, the offseason is also when large-scale renovations or new builds start. If you’re taking on a project like this, I’d recommend reviewing my Ultimate Selection Guide to help you throughout the various stages of selections.

While the offseason may mean fewer sunny beach days, it's also a golden opportunity to revitalize your coastal vacation home. Whether you opt for fresh colors, new furnishings, or a full renovation, these changes will make your home more inviting and comfortable. With a little seasonal TLC, your coastal retreat will be ready to welcome you and your guests for another unforgettable summer by the shore.
