Introducing the furnishing calculator: How much it may cost to bring your coastal home to life

After a flurry of inquiries related to furnishing (and validating on social media), I started thinking a tool to estimate how much it might cost to furnish a whole home might be useful. Whether you’re building a new home and now realizing the next step is filling it, or considering a refresh of a few rooms, you can use this tool as a starting point to achieve the coastal casual style.

How it works:

I pulled a realistic list of items that I would use in my furnishing projects and priced them according to averages from retailers like Crate & Barrel, West Elm, and Pottery Barn. Each room is broken down into its own category with its own items which may vary along with the size or price point depending on the estimated space. 

Expect wide swings 

While this calculator serves as a starting point, it's essential to recognize that actual costs may vary based on numerous factors, including the quality of vendors and specific room dimensions. If you’re furnishing yourself, you may decide some items are okay to purchase from Wayfair or Amazon, and some items from Restoration Hardware. If you’re using a decorator, this is likely a starting point which would increase from here depending on their aptitude to use trade-only vendors. Use this calculator as the initial blueprint to start planning investment costs. 

Also keep in mind that this calculator provides estimates for fundamental furnishings but may not encompass every detail. Consider supplementary items necessary to fully outfit your space, from TVs to mattresses to kitchen essentials.
