Design styles I’m leaning into in 2025

A new year is always a good time to pause and reflect - on what worked, what didn’t, and what I want to bring more of into my work. Instead of chasing the “top trends of 2025,” I’m focusing on timeless elements that feel fresh but will stand the test of time. These are the design choices that I can’t wait to lean into more this year - the ones that bring character, charm, and a little bit of personality into every project.

Here are five coastal-inspired elements I’m excited to explore more of in 2025:

Local artwork and family photos

Art has a way of making a house feel like home, especially when it’s personal. Whether it’s a painting of your family’s favorite ice cream shop or a beautifully framed photo from your last beach vacation, these pieces tell your story in a way that nothing else can.

Every summer, I make time to go to all the art shows across the island. This year I met Elizabeth Sabine and had a long, inspiring chat about her work. I left with a piece for myself and have my eyes on some for a few upcoming projects. Supporting local artists is such a beautiful way to add meaning to a home while also celebrating the community.

And family photos? Always a yes. They’re not just nostalgic - they’re a fun way to see how much everyone has grown and changed over the years. They fit perfectly into a coastal aesthetic while adding so much warmth to a space.

Playful patterns

Wallcoverings are back in the best way, and I couldn’t be happier. Coastal patterns range from playful and lighthearted to elevated and subtle - and sometimes they manage to be both at once.

One of my favorite finds is Mitchell Black’s Pinstripe Umbrellas wallpaper. From far away, it looks like classic stripes, but up close, you see tiny lounge chairs and umbrellas lining the beach. It’s playful without being overwhelming, which is exactly what I love in a pattern.

Wallpaper is such a great way to add personality to a space without committing to a full room of color. I’m excited to use more of it this year in everything from powder rooms to feature walls.

Bold tiles

Tile is one of my favorite ways to bring artistry into a home. Whether it’s an accent shower wall, a backsplash, or even flooring, the possibilities are endless.

If you know me, you know I’ve used mermaid tile in every home I’ve designed. It may technically be called “fan” style but we all know it’s scales. I plan to continue adding this signature to client projects moving forward if it fits their aesthetic!

Color isn’t the only way to go bold - play with the installation pattern. Instead of subway, do a vertical staggered or stack, herringbone, or basket weave for additional interest.

Coastal cottage charm

There’s something so comforting about the coastal cottage style. It’s relaxed but never sloppy, layered but never overwhelming. Wicker furniture, soft linens, playful patterns, and those little details that make a house feel lived-in—it’s the perfect mix of nostalgia and charm.

My 13th Street project in Ship Bottom really leans into this vibe, and I can’t wait to incorporate more of it in the year ahead. Think woven chairs, breezy curtains, and a design style that feels like summer all year long.

Built-in custom cabinetry

Built-ins are one of the most intentional ways to design a space. They’re functional, beautiful, and make even the most practical areas of the home feel special.

This year, I want to bring more built-ins into unexpected spaces. Window seats with hidden storage, custom cabinetry around fireplaces, and even beautifully designed vanities - they’re the kinds of details that make a home feel considered and complete.

And built-in bunk bed rooms - I can’t wait to get my hands on a few of these and make them into fun retreats for guests, kids, and young adults.
