6 types of coastal style

From vintage sailing décor to pops of pastel, “coastal style” doesn’t mean just one thing.

The term coastal style conjures up different images for everyone. Do you picture a lot of white with navy and striped accents? Shiplap walls or surfboard storage? The colors of shells or shell artwork? There are surprisingly various ways you can bring “coastal” to life in your home. Which style is your favorite?

1. Classic Nautical

This style incorporates a traditional maritime theme with a color palette of deep navy blues and crisp whites, striped patterns, rope accents, and nautical symbols such as anchors and signal flags.

2. California CASUAL

This style takes a more modern approach to the coastal aesthetic. It emphasizes clean lines and a neutral color palette, featuring natural materials like wicker and rattan and casual textiles such as linen and cotton. Natural light is maximized, and the focus is on open spaces and uncluttered designs that highlight the surrounding environment. (Think Studio McGee - but make it coastal!)

3. Beach Chic

Beach chic combines elements of coastal style with a touch of elegance. It often incorporates soft pastel colors, light-toned woods, luxurious textures, and a mix of vintage and contemporary furnishings.

4. Modern Beach House

The modern beach house aesthetic emphasizes sleek lines, minimalist design, and contemporary materials. It often incorporates large windows, open floor plans, and a focus on capturing panoramic ocean views. Neutral colors, smooth surfaces, and minimalist furnishings contribute to a clean and sophisticated coastal look.

5. Surf Shack

For some, being by the ocean is to be surfing. Bringing the surf indoors is all about pops of bright colors, amazing artwork, and of course, surfboard storage - throw in a little midcentury mod and you have a space that is the epitome of what the Beach Boys sang about in the ‘60s.

6. Island Vibes

This style is all about bright, vibrant colors and patterns. Think coastal colors like coral pink and turquoise, along with tropical-themed décor like palm trees and hibiscus flowers - easily applied to bedrooms for a softer approach or even living rooms for those living boldly with color.

What do you think? Any other coastal styles you would add to the list?
